The main economic sector is agriculture on which 99 percent of the population living in the rural area rely on. The life of the people living in this region is particularly difficult. Drought periods reduce the already low crops, every tenth child is malnourished. Many families can no longer live on their work, miscarried are often the cause of poverty and malnutrition .
Among the most cultivated agricultural products are maize, cassava, millet, banana, yam, sweet potatoes, peanuts, rice and many others. In many villages people have sufficient resources to feed themselves, however a variety of factors, which are found not only in the regions its selves, but also in the unfavorable global trade and economic system, hinder the development of the existing potential.
